HP introduced the DVD 300i internal writer and DVD 300e external writer. Rated at up to 4x DVD writing, the drives were twice as fast as HP’s previous generation and could fill a disc in about 15 minutes.

Both models used DVD+R/+RW media and supported direct recording from a digital camcorder. A disc held up to 4.7 GB for video, music, photographs, data or backups; the external 300e connected through either IEEE 1394 FireWire or USB 2.0.

The software bundle included ArcSoft ShowBiz DVD for storyboard and timeline video editing, HP Memories Disc Creator for photo slideshows, CyberLink PowerDVD for playback and Veritas RecordNow, Drive Letter Access and SimpleBackup for disc writing and recovery.

The internal DVD 300i was expected in US retail stores later in January 2003 for an estimated $299. The external DVD 300e was scheduled for February at an estimated $399.
