Ottonia Media, the high-definition production specialist owned by MDR, acquired Avid DS HD and helped initiate the broadcaster’s first programme produced entirely in HD. Avid supplied the editing and finishing platform.
The pilot was a classical concert by the Sächsische Staatskapelle in Dresden, recorded at the end of September 2002. MDR worked with Japanese public broadcaster NHK, which was seeking additional HD concert material.
Japan already had seven stations transmitting continuously in HD by December 2000, while German production was still at an early stage. The cooperation gave MDR practical experience with an end-to-end high-definition broadcast production.
