Harmonic’s Digital Program Insertion solution uses the DiviCom MV50 MPEG-2 encoder with Digital Cue Tones conforming to SCTE-35. It can insert both long-form and short-form material, including feature-length programmes and advertisements, into an already encoded video stream. The standards-oriented approach is intended to reduce cost and operating risk in cable, satellite, telecommunications and terrestrial systems.
The DiviCom MV50 encoder provides compression and noise reduction with dual-pass LookAhead coding for constant-bit-rate applications and statistical multiplexing at variable bit rates. A software upgrade enables standardised Digital Cue Tones to be inserted into the compressed video stream.
The MV50 integrates with other parts of a complete DPI system, including the Terayon CherryPicker, which recognises programme cues and inserts local content. Because remotely acquired video does not need to be decoded and re-encoded for insertion, the original video quality is retained and less equipment is required.
Harmonic also added Ethernet output to the MN20 multiplexer. The system accepts video from different sources, protocols and formats and can now multiplex MPEG-2 content and data for transport over an IP network. Its Ethernet output module encapsulates the MPEG-2 stream in IP packets for unicast or multicast transmission. The MN20 supports network interfaces including ASI, ATM and IP/Ethernet over 100Base-T.
