With Liquid Chrome, Pinnacle Systems will launch a new, powerful nonlinear editing system at the world’s largest video and broadcast trade show NAB in Las Vegas (April 05 to 10, 2003). Liquid Chrome combines the strengths of the Liquid software with the speed and quality of the well-known Targa 3000 hardware. For real-time and 3D effects, the system uses the powerful K2 DVE processor. This combination permits the processing of up to four video tracks, Colour Correction, 3D and 2D DVEs in real time. Additional video layers are supported through background processing by the software without resulting in any loss of time in editing. In addition to DV25 codecs and uncompressed video, the software and hardware also support the MPEG-2 4:2:2 format with variable compression rates. TitleDeko as a character generator and the Commotion compositing software are included in the scope of the system as additional software. In Germany, Liquid Chrome will come onto the market as a turnkey system from approximately 25,000 euros. In addition, there are low-priced upgrade prices for owners of Liquid Silver systems and a crossgrade program for users of Targa 3000 hardware.

With Liquid Chrome, Pinnacle Systems is targeting applications in which speed matters in postproduction in addition to flexibility in formats and editing possibilities. Connected to Pinnacle’s own Palladium Networked Storage architecture, Liquid Chrome can be integrated directly into more comprehensive production environments.

Some of the essential system features of Liquid Chrome are:

  • 2D and 3D effects, Colour FX and compositing in real time
  • Additional software effects with high-quality filtering
  • Real-time processing of up to four video layers
  • Support for background processing. This allows even the most complex effects and additional video layers to be calculated in the background without interrupting the editor’s work
  • Support for DV25, MPEG-2 (scalable up to 50 Mbps) and

uncompressed video

  • Unlimited number of video and audio layers

  • Multiprocessor-capable

  • Standard file system that simplifies networking and interoperability with other products

  • Additional software: Commotion and TitleDeko

  • Primary and Secondary color correction (Liquid CX, rendered)

  • Support for the Palladium file system for integration into comprehensive workflow solutions for broadcasters

  • Turnkey solution based on the HP computers XW6000/8000
