At a gala at New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum last evening, the winners of the fifth Adobe Design Achievement Awards were honoured. More than 1,500 students from Australia, Germany, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland and the USA had submitted their projects created with Adobe products in nine categories. The works of the most talented young graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, motion graphics artists, filmmakers and computer artists were up for selection.
“The Adobe Design Achievement Awards have established themselves as a stage for talented young designers and creatives,” says Fritz Fleischmann, managing director of Adobe Systems GmbH and Managing Director Central Europe. “The distinction in this competition can serve as a springboard into a promising career in the creative field for young talents.”
For the first time this year, young creatives from Germany, Austria and Switzerland were also able to submit their projects – with success. Students from German universities won in three of nine categories: Andreas Gaschka of Mainz University of Applied Sciences in the “Broadcast Design” category, Klaas Neumann of the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg in the “Digital Illustration” category and Hildegard Brinkel of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Bernberg in “Environmental Graphics”. A total of six German young artists reached the final round.
The submitted works were judged on overall impression, execution and design technique. All finalists were invited to New York to take part in the awards ceremony and present their work. The nine winners each received US$5,000.- and a selection of Adobe products. The finalists’ works are available for viewing on the web. This year’s jury consisted of Matthew Richmond of Chopping Block, Gail Anderson of SpotCo, Kathy Fredrickson of Studio Blue, Timothy Mason of WXIA-TV, Dava Guthmiller of Noise 13 and Frank Gladstone of IDT Entertainment.
All finalists toured top New York studios on a day trip, including C&G Partners LLC, GQ Magazine, karlssonwilker, Inc., MTV Networks Creative Services, Number Seventeen, O, The Oprah Magazine, Ogilvy & Mather Brand Integration Group, PAPER Magazine, Pentagram, R/GA, Two Twelve Associates and VH-1. Here they were able to speak with the respective bosses and learn first-hand how professional studios work.
