HP is promoting the new xw4300 workstation as a “desktop with the performance of a workstation.” The so-called High Performance Desktop Workstation is intended to offer professional users a cost-effective alternative when they need high computing and graphics performance as well as the expandability of a workstation, but can potentially do without the additional fault protection provided by ECC (Error Correction Code) memory. HP’s 64-bit computer is aimed primarily at professionals in CAD, video editing and Digital Content Creation (DCC).
The xw4300 is now available with either ECC or non-ECC memory, with a maximum RAM capacity of 8 GB. Buyers can also choose between Intel processors with Hyper-Threading or dual-core technology and various storage options, including a four-way SATA RAID controller, as well as graphics cards. HP offers Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows XP Professional SP2 and Linux Red Hat Enterprise WS 3.0/WS 4.0 as operating-system choices.
The model otherwise provides the features customary for HP workstations and can be adapted to users’ individual requirements. Simple fasteners allow the chassis to be opened without tools. The so-called “Quiet Fan Technology” is also intended to ensure a pleasantly quiet working environment.
HP’s xw4300 is available from specialist retailers at prices starting at €985 (recommended retail price).
