The HDTV standard will experience its final breakthrough in Germany and Europe during the current year. Broadcasts of the Football World Cup and new video game consoles, which also rely on high-resolution images, support this success. This is forecast by the consulting company Deloitte in its study “TMT Trends: Predictions 2006 – A focus on the media sector.” Each year, the company assesses the most important trends for the technology, media and telecommunications markets.
“Football World Cups generate very great media interest and form the ideal basis for finally establishing the new TV standard in Germany,” explains Andreas Gentner, Partner Technology, Media and Telecommunications at Deloitte.
As another trend, the observers identify rather restrained interest in offerings for mobile television. Although the industry is advertising television on mobile phones with enormous financial expenditure, consumer acceptance leaves something to be desired, Deloitte states: when watching television, customers would above all demand size (in the form of flat screens and beamers/projectors) and would forgo the mobility that “mobile TV” could offer them.
