O2 Germany is holding the Mobile Movie Award for the second time. The prize in the competition, newly conceived in 2006, will be awarded in two categories – “Professionals” and “Mobile Users.” This year’s motto is “The World Lies at Our Feet,” based on a lyric from the song “MfG – Mit freundlichen Grüßen” by the Fantastischen Vier, who are also acting as patrons. Besides creativity, participants need a video-MMS-capable mobile phone. Entries can be submitted from March 1 to October 31, 2006.

The award ceremony for both categories will take place next year in the exclusive setting of the Medienboard reception on the occasion of the 57th International Film Festival in Berlin. The prize for the Professionals group is once again endowed with 10,000 euros. Alongside the Mobile Movie Award, the winner in the “Mobile Users” category can look forward to a VIP package for Berlinale 2007 and exclusive filming accompaniment during a German film production.

O2 advertises the Mobile Movie Award as the first competition to discover and promote the mobile phone as a new format for films. The network operator offered the award for the first time in 2004. Young creatives such as filmmakers, directors, screenwriters and online designers were called upon at the time to submit short entries. The award ceremony took place at the 2005 Medienboard reception. The conditions of participation were revised and expanded for the 2006 competition. According to its own account, with this prize O2 wants to encourage both interested mobile-phone users and professional creatives to engage with the new way of seeing and filming through the mobile phone. “Every generation had its film formats, from Super 8 to the digital camera. The mobile phone will be the platform for the young generation’s private film,” explains Lutz Schüler, member of the New Business & Product Marketing management at O2 Germany: “As an entertainment provider, we want to use the Mobile Movie Award to encourage creative minds to engage with this medium.”

There are no specifications for genres in the competition. Each participant decides for themselves how to implement the theme – whether as a documentary, fiction, animated film, music or sports clip – the jury awards prizes according to artistic and creative criteria. Submissions are accepted from March 1 to October 31, 2006. The submitted entries must be designed for the MMS mobile-phone format and should be no longer than 60 seconds. The detailed conditions of participation as well as tips and tricks are available on the competition website or at o2@fortispr.de.
