Maxon is releasing a free update for Cinema 4D for the second time this year: According to the manufacturer, Release 9.6 contains more than 40 major and minor improvements compared with R9.5. The innovations mainly concern the accelerated OpenGL display on the Macintosh, compositing functions and the Content Browser.

Mac users should immediately notice the, according to the manufacturer, “dramatically faster” OpenGL preview in the editor, which on newer systems is up to 50 percent, and in individual cases up to 150 percent, faster than before. Apple users also benefit from the new font handling under Mac OS X, for example through more precise display, a new selection dialog and a larger number of supported font types.

Version 9.6 also brings news for compositing artists: Multipass output now also supports Fusion from eyeon Software. Additional multipass layers and compositing tags as well as support for Quicktime with H.264, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 codecs offer perfect functionality when working with animations in Cinema 4D.

In addition, the update offers numerous detailed improvements in the Content Browser (including compressed libraries, network support under Windows) and in the material system (better and faster handling of animated textures, loopable Noise shaders, new Hue/saturation filter et cetera).

Cinema 4D R9.6 is a free update for all owners of version 9.5 and is available immediately for Windows (32 bit and 64 bit) as well as Macintosh (also as a Universal Binary) as a download from the Maxon website. The company had already announced the new Cinema edition in April at the NAB broadcast trade fair (DP reported).
