SIGGRAPH Retrospective Honours Charles Csuri

SIGGRAPH honours a pioneer of computer animation with a dedicated Art Gallery retrospective.

Smithsonian Magazine described Charles A. Csuri as a founding figure of digital art and computer animation. SIGGRAPH honoured him with a dedicated section of its Art Gallery.

The exhibition occupied nearly as much space as the rest of the gallery and presented works dating back to 1963. Early pieces explored plotter output or manually simulated its appearance. Csuri painted the 100-by-150-centimetre She’s Watching Superman entirely from individual dots.

The technique approached digital image processing and reproduction by imitating a plotter, which simulates shading and halftones through arrangements of equally dark points. The individual dots become visible only at close range.

Csuri’s later works also use rendered 3D objects, including the flowers in Venus in the Garden, and abstract tangles of strands such as Sinescape.

The Chuck Csuri Retrospective Catalog, published for the exhibition, was scheduled to become available through SIGGRAPH.
