Vxtech is showing the new Graphixx workstation and the Nexxus 4000 Personal Cluster at Siggraph. Both computers work with Intel’s new dual-core Xeon processor, which has only been on the market for a few weeks.
The Graphixx 5000 workstation is equipped with a maximum of two dual-core processors and up to 64 gigabytes of RAM. The case has four hot-swap-capable hard-drive bays on the front and can accommodate up to four terabytes of hard-drive storage. Two 16x PCI Express slots are available for graphics cards.
Vxtech describes the Nexxus 4000 as a “Personal Cluster”: It is a case that looks like an ordinary tower, only one and a half times as large. Inside the device there is room for up to four blade servers, each of which can be equipped with 2 dual-core processors. A total of up to 128 gigabytes of RAM can be installed; the internal hard-drive storage can comprise a maximum of four terabytes.
In order to manage all the blades, a KVM switch including a USB switch is built into the case. The computer is extremely quiet even under full load and can therefore also be used directly at the workplace.
