IBC: Surround Sound for Digital Broadcasting

Coding Technologies and DTS offer a single-chip solution for outputting aacPlus-encoded sound on DTS-capable sound systems without loss of quality

Coding Technologies and DTS announced at the IBC the immediate availability of their aacPlus/DTS audio compression solution. The technology is integrated into STMicroelectronics’ STi71xx MPEG-4 decoder chip family, which is intended for use in HDTV MPEG-4 set-top boxes. In addition, the first software development kits for MPEG surround sound, which is based on the aacPlus codec, are now also available.

On just one chip, the solution combines Coding Technologies’ aacPlus multichannel decoder with a DTS encoder that can output digital multichannel audio signals directly to AV home receivers as DTS Coherent Acoustics surround sound.

The aacPlus/DTS audio compression solution is intended to enable digital-broadcasting providers to supply multichannel audio content in the highly efficient aacPlus format while at the same time reaching the DTS-capable surround-sound systems already installed in more than 60 million households.

Specifically for 5.1 surround sound, aacPlus promises equally high audio quality at 160 KBit/s as with transmission at 384 KBit/s. The integrated DTS transcoding solution operates at a bit rate of 1.5 MBit/s. It ensures backward compatibility with the installed base of home-theatre systems as well as high-quality sound output with 5.1 multichannel surround sound.
