The film, originally conceived as a double feature with “Planet Terror” (by Robert Rodriguez), attracted approximately 104,000 lovers of 1970s cinema to the screens, according to preliminary figures.
“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” defends the top spot. More than 1.05 million Hogwarts fans did not want to miss the wizard pupil’s new adventure.
“Shrek the Third” and “Die Hard 4.0” swapped places. The green ogre climbed to number two, while Bruce Willis is now at home at number three.
At position five follows another new entry with “Next”. Around 43,000 visitors saw Nicholas Cage as stage magician Cris Johnson, who has supernatural abilities. But instead of using these to protect Los Angeles from an atomic bomb, he tries to win the heart of his dream woman Liz (Jessica Biel).
Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s 13” (6) and “Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End” (7) by Gore Verbinski each fall two places.
Behind them, “Motel” enters the ranking with 28,000 viewers. Hungarian director Nimród Antal delivers his US debut with the film reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”. Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale play the leading roles.
Frank Oz gave just under 24,000 visitors a black-humored cinema experience with his new comedy “Death at a Funeral” (9).
Also new: “You Are Not Alone” at number 10. Katharina Thalbach and Axel Prahl play a quintessential Berlin married couple living in a prefabricated housing estate in Bernd Böhlich’s tragicomedy.
