Goldmedia projected that 2.5 million German households could use IPTV by 2012.
The market was expected to reach about 100,000 customers by the end of 2007, compared with two million in France, 500,000 in Spain and 300,000 in Italy.
Direct German IPTV revenue was estimated at €12.6 million for 2007 and forecast to reach €420 million in 2012. The calculation included television package fees, pay-TV, video on demand and paid supplementary services.
France had launched commercial services in 2003 and benefited from broader broadband coverage, more competition and premium programming.
German availability was still concentrated in metropolitan areas. About 14.6 million households had xDSL connections in 2006, with that figure projected to reach 21.1 million in 2008.
The study expected Germany to remain behind Europe’s largest IPTV markets despite rapid customer and revenue growth.
