The bulk were individual tracks: 8.6 million songs were downloaded from July to the end of September 2007 – an increase of 36.8 percent. So-called bundles developed even better, with growth of 41.8 percent. This includes all offerings that contain more than one track. Attractive prices and faster broadband Internet access increase the willingness to buy complete albums. Mobile downloads also benefit from technical innovations. Nine percent of all music downloads went directly to mobile phones and PDA mini-computers.
“The figures speak a clear language. The market is growing rapidly,” Altig emphasizes. A look at the total quantity since the beginning of the year proves this: Since then, 26.4 million music downloads have been sold in Internet shops, only 1.6 million fewer than in 2006 as a whole. Ulrike Altig on this: “If the development continues, the 35-million mark could be exceeded by the end of the year.”
The top sellers
Two of the three best-selling Internet tracks in the third quarter are national productions. Ich+Ich (“Vom selben Stern”) were the most popular. The casting band Monrose (“Hot Summer”) lands on the Two ahead of Rihanna (“Umbrella”).
Mobile-phone users most frequently downloaded “Hamma!” by Culcha Candela. Followed by 50 Cent (“Ayo Technology”) and Rihanna (“Don’t Stop The Music”).
Physical music market reduces losses
The losses in the physical music market were moderate. Compared with the third quarter of 2006, the segment lost 2.1 percent in quantity and 2.0 percent in revenue.
Medlock makes it
Nobody got past Mark Medlock in the past three months. His duet with Dieter Bohlen “You Can Get It” was the most successful single. “Hot Summer” by Monrose follows behind it. Third place goes to “Vom selben Stern” by Ich+Ich.
For the albums, Befour with “All 4 One” were ahead and relegate Medlock’s debut album “Mr. Lonely” to second place. LaFee closes the top 3 with “Jetzt erst recht”.
