Lucasfilm adopted Trolltech’s Qt framework for digital-entertainment software across Industrial Light & Magic, LucasArts, Skywalker Sound and Lucasfilm Animation.
The studio had already used Qt on smaller projects and selected it for broader deployment after its previous user-interface framework could no longer meet growing production needs. The cross-platform toolkit was intended for everyday design tools and ran on Windows, Linux and Mac.
Qt provided a common framework for building graphics-heavy user interfaces while keeping applications aligned with native operating-system features. Other digital-film users named at the time included Walt Disney Feature Animation, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Duboi.
Lucasfilm expected the move to reduce interface-development overhead and let its engineering teams concentrate on production-specific tools.
