Moviepilot finds films to the user’s taste

The new movie recommendation community moviepilot wants to become the first personalized, comprehensive Electronic Programm Guide (EPG) for cinema, DVD, TV, video-on-demand and IPTV. A first step has been taken with the cooperation with Internet giant T-Online.

With the moviepilot Internet service, T-Online is integrating a new Web 2.0 offering into the entertainment world of its Internet portal under the name “My Film World”.

moviepilot functions like an individual film adviser oriented toward the taste of the individual community members. Users can rate films playfully, which are then compared with the taste profiles of other users. Very personal film recommendations are then determined from this comparison.

In this way, users can, for example, find out even before a cinema release how they will like a new film. Or they can search the feature-film offering on television for films that correspond to their taste.

“Our current offering combines an individual cinema and DVD adviser with a personalized TV programme magazine,” managing director Tobias Bauckhage explains the claim.

“With moviepilot, we want to become the central decision aid for moving images in conventional and future consumption channels. Today, we initially pick up our film-enthusiastic audience where they currently consume films, take them by the hand and transfer them to the new film-consumption possibilities offered by the Internet. And in doing so we orient ourselves entirely individually toward the taste of each individual. And reduce the excess offering to what really interests each individual user.”

Film-enthusiastic actors and directors such as Heike Makatsch, Til Schweiger, Sebastian Schipper, Tom Schilling, Lorreta Stern and many more are already using the film community too.

The film recommendation machine is based on a complex recommendation algorithm developed together with Humboldt University Berlin. This algorithm is applied to the data of a lively film community with extensive social-network functions.

The effort for members is minimal because of the playful presentation. 20 to 50 films are rated within a few minutes by click and are already sufficient to create a very individual taste profile. After a few ratings, as a registered user one can then quickly have one’s personal cinema, DVD and TV programme displayed, updated daily, one hundred percent independent and tailored solely to personal preferences.

The Berlin start-up, which was launched by the film distribution company “jetfilm” and the software house “Büro am Draht”, is supported among others by business angel Stefan Glänzer (“Last.fm”).
