A mysterious mist that envelops the entire landscape forces the residents of a small town to barricade themselves in their supermarket. Creatures seem to be hiding in the white veils – strangely eerie and apparently not of this world. The uncertainty of what awaits them in the all-consuming cloud frays the nerves of the forced community and fuels fear and despair. The artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) tries to get to the bottom of the secret of the terrifying apparition. The fanatically religious Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), on the other hand, believes that God’s wrath has been kindled and can only be appeased by a human sacrifice. She quickly finds followers for her theory. Of all people, Drayton’s young son Billy (Nathan Gamble) is chosen as an atonement offering by the panic-stricken crowd. A bitter struggle for bare survival has begun in which the boundary between external and internal threat blurs…
