The three scientists are thus being honored on behalf of the Fraunhofer research team that had developed the world-famous MP3 audio coding format since the early 1980s. Each year, the CEA thus honors pioneers in consumer electronics who, with their inventions and their commitment, made an essential contribution to products that can no longer be imagined away today.

These include prominent figures such as Ray Dolby or the founders of the computer company HP, William Hewlett and David Packard.

On Tuesday, October 16, Seitzer, Gerhäuser and Brandenburg accepted the trophies from CEA President Gary Shapiro at a ceremonial reception. On this occasion, Prof. Dieter Seitzer recalled the early years of audio coding. The first signal processors, for example, were still of enormous dimensions. To this day, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau, which emerged from it, have established an excellent reputation worldwide in the field of audio coding. Prof. Seitzer, Prof. Gerhäuser and Prof. Brandenburg thanked the employees and all the researchers involved and emphasized: »Only through excellent teamwork was this development into a worldwide success possible. We are delighted and feel very honored by the international distinction.«
