CINEPLEX Münster installed Germany’s first digital cinema projection system at the 4K resolution specified by Hollywood studios: 4,096 × 2,160 pixels. The multiplex planned to operate the system in its regular daily programme on a trial basis, making it one of the first cinemas in Europe to do so.
Sony CineAlta installation
The installation resulted from cooperation between CINEPLEX Münster and Sony, then the only supplier offering production-ready 4K projection systems. Düsseldorf-based Film-Ton-Technik Hannsdieter Rüttgers supported the project.
Alongside a Sony CineAlta 4K projector, the system included a Sony MediaBlock with digital rights management designed to meet Digital Cinema Initiatives specifications. CINEPLEX owner and operator Felix Esch said the cinema considered 4K projection the future of theatrical presentation.
FTT managing director Egon Gräfen said the technology had been developed for the higher requirements of digital cinema and that the partners had successfully completed the first installation of a 4K system in Germany.
