The digitisation of transmission technology as well as television via the Internet (IPTV) and mobile TV have a particularly positive effect here. For television broadcasters, competition with the Internet for advertising revenue is becoming increasingly noticeable (www.pwc.de). The pressure of suffering in the industry is nevertheless great: Private providers view the digital expansion of public broadcasters critically, pay-TV broadcasters are concerned about early series broadcasts on free TV, and Handelsblatt commented on the planned Internet TV joint venture between Google and show-business giant Simon Fuller as follows: “The horror scenario for television broadcasters from all over the world would thus come true: The main competition would no longer be the broadcaster programmed next door on the remote control, but Google with its billions of users.” (Handelsblatt, 16.11.2007).
Decision-makers from the international media world will meet in Berlin at the end of January 2008 to discuss the future of television at a Handelsblatt annual conference. (January 29 and 30, 2008, Berlin, InterContinental). Speakers include Wolf Bauer (UFA Film & TV Produktion), Michael Börnicke Premiere), Guillaume de Posch (ProSiebenSat.1 Group), Ferdinand Kayser (SES ASTRA), Fritz Raff (Saarländischer Rundfunk/ARD chairman), Prof. Markus Schächter (Director General, ZDF), Mehmet Ali Yalçindag (Dogan Media Holding), Gerhard Zeiler (RTL Group) and Christian zu Salm (About Change Ventures GmbH).
The strategies of TV broadcasters in the digital age, the international TV landscape from an investor’s perspective, the future of pay TV and new television formats are the main topics of the media-industry meeting. The programme can be accessed on the Internet: http://www.konferenz.de/ots-fern08
