Deutsche Telekom will in future open its online video platform «Videoload» to customers of other Internet providers. Until now, access to the video-on-demand service was reserved solely for users who had booked a DSL connection with Telekom.

The company announced this on Friday in Bonn. By opening «Videoload», Telekom is striving for «a leading position in the market for Internet-based film consumption», said Christopher Schläffer, Group Product & Innovation Officer of Deutsche Telekom AG. The offering is to be launched at the CeBIT 2008 computer fair next March in Hanover.

Via «Videoload», Telekom provides more than 2,000 titles online, including films from the major Hollywood studios. For a rental period of 24 hours, the costs are between one and four euros. As part of a «download-to-burn» offering, like Videoload customers, certain films can be downloaded from the net in parallel with the start of DVD sales, burned onto a DVD and played for an unlimited period on standard DVD players. Prices range from seven to ten euros for older films and 15 euros for current titles.
