Only two of the six major US film studios now support HD DVD; two thirds of all films will in future be released on Blu-ray. This is likely to have settled the fierce competition over the successor to DVD. Observers expect Blu-ray now to establish itself as the standard, and that consumers, previously uncertain, will increasingly buy recorders for the high-definition discs. So far, 99 out of 100 DVD players sold still use the old technology. Sony is said to have promised Warner substantial marketing subsidies for its decision.
