Hundreds of thousands of players were expected to enter several months of qualification for the German World Cyber Games final in Leipzig. From 22 to 24 August, competitors would seek places on the national team, which was scheduled to contest the global final in Cologne in November.
GC Games Convention visitors would see established German esports players, emerging competitors and veteran figures. A broadcast area would show selected matches, with esports commentators covering the competition. The German national team was scheduled to be presented on 24 August.
Both GC Games Convention and the World Cyber Games had begun more than five years earlier. The Leipzig fair had developed into a major European games event, while World Cyber Games operated as an international esports competition.
“Hosting the WCG German final gives GC Games Convention another attraction,” said project director Peggy Schönbeck. She said visitors would receive a show program and access to competitive matches.
Thomas von Treichel described the Games Convention national final as preparation for the World Cyber Games grand final in Cologne. Alongside the Samsung Euro Championship at CeBIT, it formed part of a series of esports events held in Germany during 2008.
