Construction of a DVB-H network, and thus the creation of the conditions for mobile TV service to be available in time for the start of the European Football Championship, can therefore begin. MEDIA BROADCAST was supported in the application process by mobile operators Hutchison 3G Austria (3), ONE and other national and international media companies.
“We are delighted to have been awarded the contract for mobile television in Austria,” said Helmut Egenbauer, Chairman of the Management Board of MEDIA BROADCAST. “Our aim is to create successful cooperation with substantial value creation for Austria, together with mobile providers, service providers from telecommunications, broadcasting and media, and programme providers,” the Managing Director adds.
As a first step, MEDIA BROADCAST plans to establish mobile TV by June 1, 2008, in the European Championship host cities Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt, as well as in the other state capitals. This means that, right from the start, 40% of the Austrian population will receive 15 national and international television channels and four Austrian radio stations in digital quality on DVB-H-compatible mobile phones.
In a second step, by the end of 2008 the service provider will already cover 55% of residents in the mobile TV service’s coverage areas.
The encrypted mobile TV channels will be marketed by mobile providers. Hutchison 3G Austria (3) and ONE have already stated that they will offer their customers mobile TV via DVB-H technology. Discussions are currently still taking place with other potential partners in the mobile communications sector.
