Under Commission is the name of the new competition for commissioned animated work. Entries will receive awards in the animated music video, advertising and TV trailer categories. Cooperation partners are the Art Directors Club Deutschland ADC and the Art Directors Club of Europe ADC*E.
With Music for Animation, the animation festival is awarding a prize for the best music in a short animated film for the first time, in cooperation with the GEMA Foundation. The aim of the 5,000-euro prize is to promote awareness and quality of music in animated film.
From 1700 submissions, 190 films were selected for the festival’s six competitions (International Competition, Young Animation, Tricks for Kids, Animated Series, AniMovie, Under Commission). Around 500 films will be screened at the festival overall, for example in the country focus on Latvia or the tributes to Signe Baumane, Joanna Quinn, Hanna Nordholt/Fritz Steingrobe and the Brothers Quay. This year, the popular “Best of Animation” series is being compiled by Giannalberto Bendazzi. With “Cartoons: One Hundred Years of Cinema Animation”, the Milan professor of animation history created the most comprehensive work on the history of animated film. This year’s jury members include Michel Ocelot (“Azur et Asmar”, “Kirikou”).
The festival pass can be purchased at a special early-bird price from March 17 to April 17. It provides free admission to all events and parties. The pass costs 60 euros and is available through the homepage at http://www.itfs.de, by telephone on 0711-92546-123 and at i-punkt Stuttgart. After April 17, the festival pass will cost the regular price of 75 euros.
Following the strong attendance last year, the 48h3D Jam will continue. Under the motto “Crazy Horse Session”, international teams of animators will create an animated film live at the festival within two days. Also continuing is Animation Production Day, the two-day meeting of animation producers and financiers organised jointly with fmx/08 and in cooperation with Michael Schmetz Mediaconsult. The animation screenplay prize introduced last year will also be awarded again this year together with the Evangelical Church in Germany. High-calibre screenwriting workshops will additionally be offered in cooperation with MFG Filmfö¶rderung and the Heinrich-Bö¶ll-Stiftung.
The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film – Festival of Animated Film (May 1 to 6, 2008) was founded in 1982. A total of 52,500 euros in prize money is awarded in six competition categories. New this year is “Under Commission”, the competition for commissioned films. The “German Animation Screenplay Award”, created in 2007, is unique in Europe. The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film – Festival of Animated Film works closely with fmx/08, the European specialist event for animation, effects, games and digital media.
