The project is intended to improve conditions for local and regional private broadcasters entering digital transmission.
Rotating-field transmitting antennas allow the six new channels to be received throughout Leipzig, including in cars and trams. This creates new service options for public transport and taxis. Alongside conventional mobile receivers, the first mobile phones with DVB-T reception were already available. A city-information channel attracted particular interest at the launch. info TV Leipzig provides a continuous 24-hour service of deliberately short reports covering news, weather, sport and events.
The platform also creates a targeted advertising medium for local and regional companies, retailers and cultural organisations.
BBC World adds an international English-language programme to Leipzig’s offering.
“We are very pleased to provide citizens in Saxony with our global news and information service through DVB-T,” says Gerry Ritchie, vice president of distribution for BBC Global Channels.
“BBC World broadcasts around the clock and can be received in more than 200 countries and regions. It is now also available through DVB-T in Saxony.”

Leipzig Fernsehen broadcasts information from Leipzig and the region around the clock, combining conventional news with magazines covering sport, health and lifestyle.
BBC World provides a continuous English-language information and documentary service.
Bibel TV Stiftung gGmbH operates a 24-hour channel based on Christian values, presenting feature films, Christian music, pastoral programmes, reports and documentaries.
The city-information channel is intended mainly to provide residents and visitors with details about hotels, restaurants, events, trade fairs and cultural activities.
Radio Leipzig is a full regional radio service with hourly local news, weather and traffic information for listeners aged 25 to 49.
