3Dconnexion announced today at the Virtual World Conference in New York that Second Life Grid, the platform for Linden Lab’s popular 3D online world, supports 3Dconnexion 3D mice. From version 1.20, announced for mid-April, Second Life residents will be able to benefit from navigating with a 3Dconnexion 3D mouse. With the SpaceNavigator 3D mouse, Second Life residents can control their avatars, change camera views and build 3D objects in Second Life more easily than ever.
Unlike a standard 2D mouse, 3Dconnexion’s 3D mice enable simple and precise control of 3D objects and intuitive navigation in 3D applications. Second Life residents can enjoy all the benefits of straightforward 3D navigation with the devices and experience the virtual world in an entirely new way.
The most important navigation functions of 3Dconnexion’s 3D mice in Second Life include:
• Fluid avatar control: Residents can effortlessly control their avatars by gently pulling, pushing and twisting the cap of the 3D mouse.
• Easy camera-view changes: By gently twisting the cap of the 3D mouse, residents can control the camera view and move intuitively in Flycam mode.
• Fast switching between Flycam mode and avatar control: The buttons on the 3D mice allow residents to switch easily between Flycam mode and avatar control. Default navigation settings are already provided in the Second Life interface. Second Life residents can, however, adapt the speed and other navigation settings of the 3D mice to their personal preferences.
• Control of 3D objects in Build mode: In Build mode, users can move, zoom and rotate 3D objects to view their constructions from different angles. The buttons on the 3D mice make it possible to switch to camera mode for optimised control of 3D objects and a fluid design process.
Version 1.20 of the Second Life Grid platform supports the 3Dconnexion product line on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista, and on Macintosh OS X 10.4.6. Prices: SpaceNavigator Personal Edition (€59), SpaceNavigator Standard Edition (€99), SpacePilot (€399), SpaceExplorer (€299), SpaceTraveler (€199).
