SANYO and Toshiyuki Kita at Milano Design Week 2008

SANYO will present products and an installation based on its environmentally focused Think GAIA design concept at Milano Design Week.

In keeping with the environmental theme, SANYO is presenting its SUNPLANT installation at the Milano Capital del Design GREEN ENERGY DESIGN event. The installation was created with Toshiyuki Kita, one of the world’s best-known designers. SANYO is the only electronics company participating in GREEN ENERGY DESIGN, where ten internationally known architects and designers are presenting installations. A second exhibit is also displayed in a window of the La Rinascente department store at Milan’s Cathedral Square.

The 3.75-meter SUNPLANT installation incorporates SANYO’s reusable eneloop batteries and high-efficiency HIT solar cells. It takes the form of a tree whose branch-mounted solar cells capture sunlight like leaves. Some of the resulting energy powers the artwork’s LED lamps and can also recharge eneloop batteries with clean energy.

SUNPLANT emerged from the concepts underlying SANYO’s Think GAIA brand vision and eneloop universe product line. It shows how everyday electronic devices can be powered by clean natural solar energy using reusable and recyclable batteries. Toshiyuki Kita proposed the SUNPLANT design to represent the future of energy and electricity through the familiar form of a plant.

During the Milan Salon, the Japan Industrial Design Association is also staging JAPAN DESIGN 2008 – Innovation –, where SANYO’s eneloop universe products are being exhibited. These products have received awards including Japan’s 2007 Good Design Grand Prize and the 2008 iF Product Design Award. SANYO intends the display to reinforce a lifestyle favoring reusable products.
