Girls’ Day at ZDF Headquarters and Regional Studios: 300 Girls Learn About TV Production and Broadcasting Careers

With more than 300 places at its headquarters and regional studios, ZDF is offering an extensive program for the nationwide Girls’ Day initiative on Thursday, 24 April. The broadcaster will open its doors to girls in grades 5 to 10 and offer opportunities to learn about technical careers in television production.

At ZDF headquarters in Mainz, 210 girls will experience how television is made. Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Labor and Women’s Affairs Malu Dreyer has announced that she will visit ZDF as a prominent supporter. The students from Mainz and the surrounding area will attend all-day workshops or tour workshops and production areas at the broadcasting center; the older participants will also be allowed to make television themselves. Supported by ZDF professionals, they will work in front of and behind the camera and produce programs around 15 minutes long. In Studio 2, 20 students from Stefan George Gymnasium in Bingen will produce a program with Minister Malu Dreyer as a studio guest, which is also scheduled for broadcast on ZDFinfokanal. In keeping with the theme of the day, the girls will interview the politician about attractive technical careers for young women. Prominent ZDF presenters including Norbert Lehmann of “ZDFreporter,” sports presenter Christa Haas and Andreas Korn of “logo!” will also answer the girls’ questions. Visits to ZDF’s data center and systems engineering department, camera operators, editors and designers are also planned, along with production of a weblog.

In Berlin, Regional Studio Director Susanne Gelhard will welcome the young visitors to the Zollernhof. There, too, the girls will gain an impression of everyday production work at ZDF and visit facilities including the television control room. More than 100 girls in total will visit ZDF’s domestic studios and PHOENIX in Bonn to participate in the various Girls’ Day programs. At ZDF Hamburg, nine girls will shoot and edit a short report, while ten girls in Düsseldorf will be guests on the program “Volle Kanne.” At 3sat, students from Gymnasium am Römerkastell in Bad Kreuznach will edit a film using footage created during project days at their school. ZDF trainees in the media-design profession supported them during shooting.
