ZDFmediathek has been nominated for the Grimme Online Award in the newly created Special category. The Grimme Institute uses the Grimme Online Award Special to recognize innovative, high-quality concepts that do not fit into the existing categories.

The ZDF online video portal was relaunched at IFA 2007 in its third version. Monthly views rose from seven million in September to nine million. Development was led by ZDF’s central editorial and new-media teams together with Pixelpark.

The concept is based on television viewing while linking online and broadcast television. Programmes can be accessed from a PC, remote control or mobile device. The “Missed a programme?” guide is a core feature, with much of ZDF’s news and magazine output and around 50 percent of the main programme available on demand. The aim is to make licence-fee-funded content accessible across platforms.
