This is the only way to explain the almost complete absence of epidemics in email traffic.
The most important changes in the monthly statistics are due to the return of several old worms that have been known for years. By contrast, several Trojan downloaders that were highly active from January through April, including Agent.ica, Agent.hsl, and Diehard, have disappeared without a trace.
The Warezov and Zhelatin worms have not returned to the Top 20 since disappearing in February. Their authors appear to have finally abandoned sending the worms’ executable components by email and now use hyperlinks to infected websites.
Against this background, email traffic can be said to be becoming increasingly secure—at least with regard to viruses distributed by electronic mail. The problems of phishing and spam remain, however, and are ultimately no less serious or dangerous for end users.
Other malware active in email traffic accounted for a significant 12.15 percent of all malicious programs intercepted.
