Softimage has announced the latest version of its professional 3D animation software. Softimage XSI 7 includes an open platform called ICE. According to the manufacturer, its visual interface and node-based programming will enable users to generate complex visual effects very quickly and easily.

Softimage promises particle-based effects, deformations and new visual effects designed to make work easier and faster for both 3D artists and TDs.

Multi-Threaded GigaCore II

The ICE platform in Softimage XSI 7 is supported by GigaCore II, a processing engine designed to guarantee optimal performance.

Softimage ICE Particles and Deformations

According to the manufacturer, the new version offers numerous ready-made “ICE connections” for particle-based effects and deformations, enabling artists to begin production more quickly. Unlike comparable elements in other 3D software solutions, these presets are “open.” This means users can understand how they work and modify them when necessary. They can also present self-created “compounds” within their company or to the worldwide community on Softimage Net, either in an open XML format or as a locked binary file to protect their intellectual property.

Pricing and availability

Softimage XSI 7 is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2008. Softimage XSI 7 Essentials will cost approximately $2,995 in the United States, while Softimage XSI 7 Advanced will cost approximately $4,995.
