3sat Remains One of the Largest Supporters of Culture in the German-Speaking World

In 2009, 3sat will remain the cross-border cultural channel for the German-speaking world. ZDF Director General Markus Schächter told the ZDF Television Council that high-quality programmes in classical music, theatre and literature were planned for 3sat in the coming year.

Among other things, in May 2009 3sat will mark the 70th anniversary of the death of writer Joseph Roth with an intensive examination of his works, and in the autumn it will devote a programming focus to the life and work of composer Joseph Haydn. These programmes will be supplemented by numerous live broadcasts.

They include concerts broadcast from July to September as part of the “3sat Festival Summer 2008.” Through its many partnerships—for example with the “55th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen,” the “Berlinale” and the “46th Berlin Theatertreffen”—3sat will again be one of the largest supporters of culture in Germany, Austria and Switzerland next year. Looking ahead to 3sat’s development, Schächter also announced that, under ZDF’s leadership, the channel would further sharpen and expand its profile as a science broadcaster. The focus would be on themed days such as “Calvin” in July 2009 and programming strands such as “Darwin” in January 2009 and “Astronomy” in autumn 2009. Schächter said that no other programme on German-language television could, as a television experiment, connect and permeate the German-speaking cultural region across national borders as successfully as 3sat had done for almost 25 years. ZDF would fulfil its responsibility and continue developing 3sat in this direction.
