In fiscal 2008, revenue in the Client division rose from $14.976 billion to $16.865 billion, driven primarily by Windows Vista sales. In the fourth quarter alone, fiscal-year revenue increased from $3.809 billion to $4.367 billion. “Since its market launch, Windows Vista has helped the Client division’s revenue grow by an average of 16 percent across all quarters,” Colleen Healy, General Manager of Investor Relations, said during a conference call.
Overall, the worldwide PC market recorded strong growth in the second quarter of the calendar year, rising 16 percent to 71.9 million units sold. According to market research company Gartner, this was again driven mainly by strong demand for notebooks. In the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa), unit sales increased by as much as 23.5 percent compared with the year-ago quarter.
Client division revenue rose from $2.586 billion to $4.335 billion in the second quarter and from $3.316 billion to $4.138 billion in the first quarter. Client revenue declined slightly only in the third quarter. This was mainly due to the exceptionally high revenue in the third quarter of the previous fiscal year, which had accumulated because of deferrals associated with the Express Upgrade for the Windows Vista Technology Guarantee Program during the first half of fiscal 2007.
