Record Participation in “Get the Disk” Design Competition

Toshiba’s Storage Device Division has recorded a new participation record for its online game “Get the Disk.”

Industrial designers among the participants can win a special prize: they can submit their own design proposal for an innovative storage device and win a Qosmio notebook.

The design competition for the online game “Get the Disk” is part of a Toshiba campaign highlighting the benefits of hard-drive technology in industrial applications. Uses include video-surveillance systems, automated production processes, point-of-sale terminals and aviation equipment.

The online game “Get the Disk” was developed by a group of highly talented designers who work for well-known game companies and animation studios and who contributed, among other projects, to the computer-animated Sissi parody Lissi and the Wild Emperor. In the online game, players must save the world from the loss of all electronic data in the finest Bond tradition. The hero can rely only on his trusted Toshiba hard drive, must overcome numerous challenges and ultimately develop a storage device of his own to save the world from destruction. The participant who solves this task best will win a Toshiba Qosmio G50 notebook.

All submitted design studies will be assessed by a jury whose members come from some of the world’s leading IT and consumer brands, including Seymourpowell. The key evaluation criteria are practicality and marketability. The best design study may also be used by a Toshiba partner as the basis for a new product. The design itself will naturally remain the winner’s intellectual property, and the winner will receive royalties if a product is released.

“Technology is becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives and is already almost ubiquitous through wireless networking,” says David Fisher of design consultancy Seymourpowell and a member of the design jury. “Data storage is part of this seamless, intelligent network and could usher in a paradigm shift in our society. But what should the required devices look like? I am very interested to see how participants in this competition translate the social responsibility of storing data into technology.”

“This competition gives designers and engineers the opportunity to unleash their creativity and play a decisive role in shaping the future of hard drives in industry,” says Martin Larsson, Vice President and General Manager of Toshiba’s Storage Device Division. “It also gives us an opportunity to learn from the people who will become the industrial-design geniuses of the future.”

All key information about “Get the Disk” is available at http://www.harddiskdriverevolution.com. Industrial designers can find complete entry information there and play the online game. They need only register their name on the website and provide Toshiba with their contact details. The submission deadline for designs is 30 September 2008.
