Autodesk reported revenue of US$620 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2009, an increase of 18 percent compared with the same period of the previous year. Earnings per share calculated in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) rose by 3 percent in the quarter to US$0.39, compared with US$0.38 in the prior-year period. Non-GAAP earnings rose by 27 percent in the second quarter to US$0.56, compared with US$0.44 in the same period of the previous year.

“We are very pleased that Autodesk was once again able to achieve record revenue this quarter,” said Carl Bass, President and CEO of Autodesk. “Our strong performance is attributable to our delivery of first-class design and engineering software solutions for a wide variety of business segments worldwide. Autodesk’s strong market position, our distribution across industries and regions, our strong balance sheet and excellent cash flow provide a solid foundation for long-term success.”

The Second Quarter in Figures

In addition to favorable currency effects, the strong second-quarter performance was driven by continued revenue growth in model-based 3D design solutions and 2D vertical products, revenue gains in emerging markets, and upgrades and maintenance services. Total revenue from model-based 3D solutions—Inventor, Revit, Civil 3D, NavisWorks, Robobat and Moldflow—rose 36 percent compared with the second quarter of the previous year to US$166 million, representing 27 percent of total revenue for the quarter. Even excluding Moldflow, which had only recently been acquired during the reporting quarter, model-based 3D solutions still grew by 31 percent to US$159 million. Autodesk sold approximately 36,000 commercial licenses for its model-based 3D design products, including approximately 10,000 Inventor licenses and 26,000 licenses for Revit, Civil 3D, NavisWorks and Robobat, applications used in architecture and construction.

Autodesk also increased revenue from 2D vertical products by 16 percent compared with the prior-year period. Revenue in emerging markets rose 40 percent year over year to US$114 million, representing 18 percent of total revenue. The EMEA region accounted for US$267 million in revenue, an increase of 31 percent year over year, or 15 percent at constant exchange rates. Revenue in the Asia-Pacific region rose 18 percent from the prior-year period—or 11 percent at constant exchange rates—to US$150 million in the reporting quarter. In the Americas, despite the continuing difficult economic environment, revenue rose four percent compared with the second quarter of the previous year to US$203 million.
