Many of these new applications use breakthrough iPhone technologies—including the large display, Multi-Touch user interface, fast real-time 3D graphics, built-in accelerometer and location technology—to create mobile applications far more powerful than ever before.
“The iPhone’s unique capabilities, the straightforward SDK and the ability to reach an audience of millions through the App Store made the decision to develop for it an easy one,” says John Pollard, CEO of Jott. “So far, we have had hundreds of thousands of downloads of Jott for iPhone, which has proved to be a significant win for our company.”
“Because I already had a full-time job, I used the iPhone SDK to develop Trism in my spare time. I could never have imagined this kind of success in my wildest dreams,” adds Steve Demeter, founder of Demiforce. “The fact that I sold more than 27,000 downloads in the first three weeks now gives me a substantial second income and exciting career opportunities that I did not have just a few weeks ago.”
“As an 18-year-old participant in the iPhone Developer Program, I won an Apple WWDC scholarship and used the opportunity to finish my application during the summer vacation,” says Bryan Henry, developer of Equivalence. “It was great fun and probably the most lucrative summer job I have ever had. In the first month alone, I earned $8,000 from App Store sales.”
“Our account registrations through the App Store are 300 percent higher than through all our other registration methods combined,” says Chris MacAskill, co-founder of SmugMug. “With our iPhone app, we have been able to do things we would never have dreamed possible on any other mobile platform. A revolutionary era has begun for us and for iPhone and iPod touch users.”
The App Store on iPhone works over both mobile networks and Wi-Fi. This makes it accessible from almost anywhere, allowing users to buy and download applications wirelessly and begin using them immediately. Applications are either free or charged to the user’s iTunes account. The App Store notifies users when updates are available for the relevant applications. The App Store can also be accessed through the free iTunes application for Mac or PC (www.itunes.de), which synchronizes applications to the iPhone or iPod touch over a USB cable.
