The licensing agreement will facilitate the development and marketing of JVC equipment compatible with XDCAM EX.
The XDCAM EX file format enables the development of extremely compact, robust, and powerful camcorders such as the PMW-EX1 and PMW-EX3, which support recording at full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 with 35 Mbit/s MPEG Long GOP compression on SxS memory cards. These cards are based on the ExpressCard standard, the recognized successor to the PCMCIA memory-card infrastructure. The specifications for SxS memory cards were jointly developed by Sony and SanDisk.
Because most laptops now come with an ExpressCard slot as standard, integrating this medium ensures strong IT compatibility both today and in the future. Since the introduction of the PMW-EX1 last year, the XDCAM EX file format has established itself as a new standard for tapeless HD camcorders. XDCAM EX also provides a workflow supported by leading manufacturers of nonlinear editing systems.
The SxS memory card uses advanced data-transfer technology that improves workflow efficiency and reduces the time needed to transfer large volumes of HD video data. Speeds of up to 800 Mbps can be achieved. The card’s compact dimensions allow significantly lighter and smaller camcorders to be built. At the same time, the card is reliable enough to perform even under the most difficult conditions. Another important factor, particularly for mobile use, is its low power consumption.

The partnership with JVC further confirms XDCAM EX as the format of choice supporting and accelerating the adoption of professional tapeless acquisition products and workflows. Sony will continue to actively promote use of the XDCAM EX file format across a wide range of professional video applications.
