At the IBC Awards ceremony in Amsterdam, Quantel again demonstrated its market leadership in stereo 3D technology, collecting a total of six prizes.
After being the only company to demonstrate stereo 3D postproduction technology at IBC last year, Quantel is now extending its leading position with two new products. The SIP2100 stereo image processor makes stereoscopic images substantially easier and faster to produce. Quantel’s Stereo 3D sQServer completes the 3D television production chain with an important key element.
Quantel also received awards together with Walt Disney, Fotokem and Pace for the impressive concert film Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which broke every US box-office record for its type earlier in the year. The 3D concert film won the coveted IBC Innovation Award Judges’ Prize.
Hannah Montana was recorded in Salt Lake City in mid-November and postproduced within eleven weeks. Eight Pace 3D camera systems were used, based on modified digital Sony cameras recording to HDCAM SR. The short production and postproduction schedule was made possible by Quantel’s Stereoscopic 3D postproduction software, which was used for colour correction and all digital-intermediate work.
The postproduction of the 3D concert film received the Content Creation Award at the IBC Innovation Awards. Fotokem in Burbank used Quantel’s Pablo 4K finishing system in combination with the efficient Genetic Engineering infrastructure, enabling several users to process the material in parallel at 4K in real time. The solution displays the result in real time while both image streams are being edited interactively. This allowed Fotokem to meet Walt Disney Pictures’ requirements and complete the 3D concert film in almost the same time as a 2D film.
The development of stereoscopic 3D postproduction technology earned Quantel the 2008 IABM Design Award at this year’s IBC. The prestigious award recognises technical solutions and products that help advance the audiovisual industry. The stereo 3D server technology received the TVB Europe Editors’ Award. The SIP2100 stereo image processor, developed in cooperation with 3ality Digital, received a Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit and the TV Technology STAR 2008 Award.
