Four applications prevailed in NVIDIA’s CUDA Challenge, which sought Europe’s most innovative GPU developers using CUDA, NVIDIA’s C compiler for GPU programming.
The winners were:
- First place: GIMP Filter Plug-In by Richard Membarth of Germany, winning an HP xw8600 workstation with dual 3.33 GHz Xeon 5260 processors, Quadro FX 3700, Tesla C870 and a 30-inch HP display.
- Second place: Fluid Flow Simulation by Jan Linxweiler of Germany, winning an NVIDIA Tesla D870 deskside system.
- Third place: Robot Range Finder by Janusz Bedkowski of Poland, winning an NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700 graphics card.

Fourth place: Face Detection and Tracking by Jacek Naruniec of Poland, also winning a Quadro FX 3700.
“The competition encouraged developers to use their skills and creativity to build applications exploiting the full spectrum of GPU performance,” said Bernhard Gleissner, NVIDIA Vice President Sales for EMEA and India. Winners were judged on originality, usefulness, difficulty and use of GPU computing power.
The jury was particularly impressed by the speed increase achieved by Membarth’s GIMP plug-in, which allows Linux users to apply GPU computing power to image editing and demonstrates CUDA’s potential. Linxweiler’s fluid-flow simulation also achieved excellent GPU results. Robot Range Finder and Face Detection and Tracking showed promising uses of the parallel computing power of CUDA-capable GPUs.
