German Computer Game Award to Premiere in Munich

CAM welcomes the decision to choose Munich as the venue.

The Cluster Audiovisual Media (CAM) welcomes the decision by Minister of State for Culture Bernd Neumann and the industry associations to hold the German Computer Game Award ceremony in Munich for the first time next year. Bavarian Media Minister Eberhard Sinner, who strongly supported Bavaria’s bid, announced the decision today at the opening of the Munich Media Days.

“This award ceremony in Munich is an excellent signal for the location and recognition of Bavaria’s diverse and creative development scene. It also improves the conditions for the state’s already strong games industry,” said FFF managing director and cluster spokesman Klaus Schaefer.

The German Computer Game Award will be presented on 31 March 2009 at the opening of the Munich Gaming industry conference, organised by Medientage GmbH. Munich and Berlin will alternate as hosts of the annual award ceremony in the coming years. Prizes will be awarded in ten categories for outstanding and educationally valuable game productions of German origin, including an award for Best German Game. The awards carry total prize money of €600,000, funded in equal shares by the federal budget and the industry associations Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (BIU), Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien (Bitkom), and G.A.M.E. – Bundesverband der Entwickler von Computerspielen. An independent jury appointed by the German Bundestag, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and the games industry will decide the winners.
