Unlike the traditional games industry, the young company has not been affected by the financial crisis and expects to generate revenue in the hundreds of millions in 2009. “We assume that the recession will actually give us an additional growth boost,” explains Gameforge CEO Klaas Kersting. “The advantage lies in our business model. Traditional game developers depend on customers being willing to spend money on a game without knowing whether they will really enjoy it. That willingness will decline significantly in the future.” To use Gameforge’s games, players need only register once with a username, password and valid email address. Registered users can play any of the company’s more than 12 games free of charge for an unlimited period. Those who nevertheless wish to spend money can purchase add-ons and premium features within a game, for example to customize their character or gain small time advantages. To continue developing new games and expanding existing ones to its customary quality standards, the company is constantly looking for highly qualified specialists. “We have many exciting projects ahead of us,” says Kersting. “We nearly tripled our workforce in 2008. Even so, we are still looking for plenty of creative minds who would enjoy helping us develop Gameforge further, both nationally and internationally.”
