“May the gods be with you!” The long-awaited action role-playing game Rise of the Argonauts from Codemasters, one of Europe’s leading developers and publishers of PC and video games, and developer Liquid Entertainment was scheduled for release on December 12 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Rise of the Argonauts transports players to ancient Greece, a world full of heroes, legends and gods.
Inspired by one of humanity’s greatest myths, Rise of the Argonauts tells the story of the adventurous search for the legendary Golden Fleece. Alongside Hercules, Achilles, Atalanta and other Argonauts, players take the role of Jason, travel across the Aegean Sea and discover magnificent islands with stately temples, sunken cities and mysterious forests.
By dedicating heroic deeds to one of four gods, players influence the course of the journey and develop their character by learning new abilities. Players can also win the favor of Ares, Apollo, Hermes or Athena by choosing dialogue responses most likely to please a particular deity.
Unlike previous action role-playing games, Rise of the Argonauts uses an intuitive real-time combat system without complex, nested menus, offering accessible and spectacular duels. As a true warrior, Jason carries four upgradeable weapons: shield, sword, mace and spear. Weapons can be switched at any time in combat at the press of a button, allowing players to execute devastating attack combinations.
“We want players to become completely immersed in Jason’s adventures. They must feel that they are Jason,” said Ed Del Castillo, president of Liquid Entertainment. “By revolutionizing the action RPG genre with an exciting combat system and a compelling story based on classical literature, and by removing unnecessary menu systems and screen displays, we draw players more deeply into the game world both visually and emotionally.”
The result was described as a role-playing experience more exciting, gripping and ultimately entertaining than anything before it. Rise of the Argonauts was scored by renowned, multiple-award-winning film and television composer Tyler Bates. Bates had written music for more than 40 films and television episodes, including the celebrated score for “300.” “Rise of the Argonauts is an epic gaming experience featuring some of the greatest heroes of Greek mythology, such as Jason, Hercules and Achilles—an inspiration for dramatic, moving music that provides the fitting framework for this exciting adventure,” Bates said.
With its combination of exploration, adventure and action, and a story built around timeless themes such as love and revenge, Rise of the Argonauts was set to revive ancient Greece on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from December 12. The game was released in Germany in an unmodified, uncut version. The official website at http://www.rise-of-the-argonauts.de offered a glimpse of Jason and the Argonauts’ glorious journey.
