Quantel has won this year’s Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) Engineering Excellence Award for its stereoscopic Pablo 3D system. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding technical innovations that represent a major advance for the post-production industry. The award ceremony took place on November 6, 2008, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
“Stereo 3D opens up entirely new possibilities for the film industry, and this award recognizes our pioneering role in this development,” said Mark Horton, Quantel’s head of strategic development, at the Hollywood ceremony. “Last year, our Genetic Engineering infrastructure solution also won the HPA Engineering Excellence Award. That gave the product additional momentum in the market and brought significant recognition to our development engineers. I am confident that this award will have a similar effect and help drive this exciting new market development decisively forward.”
Quantel’s stereoscopic 3D tools for all Pablo, eQ and iQ systems allow two simultaneous image streams to be processed in parallel. The system provides an entry into interactive 3D post-production, enabling images for the left and right eye to be edited and displayed as a 3D image in real time without waiting for rendering. The entire process is nearly as fast as conventional 2D post-production.
Quantel’s stereoscopic 3D system is already being used by leading post-production studios worldwide. These include FotoKem, PlasterCITY Digital Post, Stereoscope, Gradient Effects, Modern VideoFilm, 3ality Digital and Pace in the United States, as well as post-production facilities in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris and other major cities around the world.
At the award ceremony, HPA president Leon Silverman highlighted the creative achievements of designers and developers. “Artistic achievement is easy to recognize on the screen and is therefore more readily honored than the creative technical solutions behind it that make the quality of those images possible. Continuous product innovation and an increasingly complex and interconnected post-production industry enable these advances in image production, constantly expanding the limits of what is possible,” Silverman said. “Through their expertise and inventions, the Engineering Excellence Award winners have laid the technological foundation for artistic design and help the post-production industry demonstrate that it plays an essential role in the creative production of content.”
