Apple’s iTunes App Store now offers customers well over 10,000 iPhone applications. For the first time, the best applications have been recognized with the Best App Ever Award. RjDj music software, one of the newest applications, was nominated in two categories just two months after launch, making it one of the most popular iPhone applications.
RjDj’s completely new and highly creative approach to music earned nominations in the “Most Innovative App” and “Most Creative Use of iPhone Hardware” categories. Using the motion sensor and touchscreen, RjDj incorporates all movements and sounds from the user’s surroundings into the music being heard. Listening to music becomes an incomparable experience, as the same scene sounds different every time it is played—depending on where the user is, what they are doing and what is happening around them.
RjDj is backed by a highly motivated team from across Europe. It includes Michael Breidenbrücker, one of the co-founders of Last.fm; Last.fm chairman Stefan Glänzer; and a team of music technologists around Günter Geiger and Paul Brossier that developed the first version of RjDj in Barcelona. “Only recently we released our second album—and now we have two nominations for the Best App Ever Award,” says Glänzer.
Background: The new award was prompted by Apple’s published Best of 2008 list, which honored the best-selling iPhone application. But the founders of 148Apps.com wanted to offer iTunes App Store users more guidance. Following an initial nomination round involving users, bloggers, developers and entrepreneurs, ten nominees in each of 34 categories advanced to the final Best App Ever vote. Internet and iPhone users could then vote for one week.
Above all, the award is intended to help iPhone users find the best and most interesting applications among the more than 10,000 available for the smartphone. For the winner, the award primarily means increased popularity.
