With Android support developed by NVIDIA in close cooperation with Google and the Open Handset Alliance, manufacturers can now use Tegra-series processors to develop the next generation of mobile devices. This will enable users to access new services such as mashups and location-based applications.
“We welcome Android support from NVIDIA Tegra and look forward to many Android-based devices that will deliver an exceptional consumer experience,” said Andy Rubin, Google’s Senior Director of Mobile Platforms.
The new Android-enabled NVIDIA Tegra APX 2600 processor will be presented at NVIDIA’s stand at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Hall 1, Stand IC34. NVIDIA will make an optimized, accelerated Android port available to OEM customers in the second quarter of 2009.
“NVIDIA and Google are both working to realize the potential of mobile devices in visual computing, and now we have combined the power of Tegra with the innovation of the Android platform,” said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of NVIDIA’s Mobile Business Unit. “NVIDIA is working within the Open Handset Alliance to make optimal use of the opportunities Android provides for improving graphics performance and multimedia acceleration.”
