Crazy Horse Session: The 48-Hour 3D Jam

The live animation competition returns to the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, with applications open to filmmakers aged 30 or under.

The task

Approximately five to seven two-person teams will develop an animated film within 48 hours. The competition begins at noon on Wednesday, May 6, and ends at noon on Friday, May 8.

All teams will use the same character to tell a short story lasting between 30 seconds and two minutes. The character is Trixi, the festival mascot, and the Trickstar award statue. Organizers will provide participants with source code for different animation applications. The competition compares the filmmakers’ storytelling, graphic style and command of animation software including Maya, 3ds Max and Softimage XSI.

Participation

Animation students from international film schools may enter, as can freelance animators and animation producers aged 30 or under. Organizers will select seven two-person teams from all applications.

The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film will cover accommodation in a guesthouse or youth hostel for up to four days. Participants will also receive free festival accreditation.

Awards

The awards ceremony takes place on Saturday, May 9. Winners will receive various non-cash prizes such as software and hardware.

The completed films will be distributed on DVD free of charge during the awards ceremony.

Application

Applicants should submit a filmography, a previously produced animated film on DVD and contact details including name, address, telephone number and email. They should also state whether they want to work with Maya, 3ds Max or Softimage XSI. The source gives March 3, 2009 as the submission deadline, despite labeling the section with March 1.
