The new Sony PVM- and BVM-series LCD production monitors will ship to their first customers at the end of February and in mid-March respectively. With the BVM-L170, Sony introduces a smaller counterpart to the successful BVM-L230 Class 1 reference monitor, which has become standard in many production houses and mastering suites. With a screen diagonal of only 17 inches, it provides Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and all the features of the larger model. The 23-inch PVM-L2300 with WUXGA resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels will become available earlier, providing many BVM-series features at a lower price and with somewhat wider tolerances.
Both monitors include TRIMASTER technology for precise picture and colour reproduction with consistent images. Other features include a 10-bit display for smooth greyscale and band-free colour transitions, plus the 12-bit display engine established by the BVM-L230. The monitors also provide 100/120 Hz refresh rates, enabling an intelligent Black Frame Insertion mode that substantially reduces motion blur. Production functions include picture-and-picture mode, pixel zoom and HD frame capture. Both models process a range of professional video formats and provide four expansion slots for additional video interfaces.
The PVM-L2300 uses the Precision Wide CCFL Backlight System for a broad colour gamut and accurate colour reproduction. The compact Class 1 BVM-L170 uses a Precision LED Backlight for even tighter tolerances and a very broad colour gamut suitable for digital-cinema applications. It also has a 24 V DC connection, making it the first LCD reference monitor suitable for mobile use.
The expanded line-up makes TRIMASTER technology relevant to more demanding applications. Combining technical features and picture quality with LCD advantages such as low weight, reduced depth and installation flexibility, Sony PVM-L and BVM-L monitors are intended as successors to broadcast CRT monitors. Both are equipped for post-production and high-quality broadcast monitoring, while the Class 1 BVM series is also suitable for mastering and digital-cinema applications.
