During its first weekend, 360,830 people saw the film. Box-office revenue totalled EUR 2,651,030, with an unusually high average of more than 1,000 viewers per screen.

“This result is of exceptional importance to us. This film has the potential to join the great cinema successes in Senator’s 30-year history. It also shows that our realignment is working,” said Senator board member Helge Sasse. “The film combines the opportunities and risks of international productions with the advantages of German cinema: under the funding guidelines it qualifies as a German film, with a German literary source, many German actors and German shooting locations.”

Senator Entertainment AG redefined its strategy last year, reducing higher-risk US productions and placing greater emphasis on European cinema, particularly German productions. A second pillar, “deutschfilm,” was therefore founded alongside Senator Film Produktion a few weeks ago to accelerate the realignment. “After only 10 percent in 2008, German productions already account for 40 percent of our theatrical releases in 2009. We must build on the successes of great films from ‘Aimée & Jaguar’ to ‘The Miracle of Bern,’ Senator’s last number one in October 2003. THE READER appears to be achieving that,” said Sasse.
